Good Morning, I hope you had a good Halloween.
To start I would like you to watch the following video. You may remember I told you about a businessman in Port Coquitlam who bought (with his own money) a container to house homeless people. He was then fined for having people sleep on his property. They has since dropped the fine but he is not allowed to use his containers (he now has 3). He has made this video to get support for a project to create a container shelter in the Tri-Cities (Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam and Port Moody). Please watch the video and answer the questions as a post.
1. What do you think about this idea?
2. Would you think differently if the proposal was to put the containers in your neighborhood?
3. We live in a time when the government offers assistance to (some) who are in need but traditionally, help usually came from the community, not governement. Should the community still try to help those in need or should it only be the role of government? Explain.
4. When the Selkirk settlers first setttled in the Red River near the Metis, their farms were not successful. They were eventually helped by the HBC but it was actually the Metis that first helped them (eventhough they didn't get along). Some call this social responsibility. Please discuss the idea of social resposibility with a partner and then write a paragraph addressing the following. Is social responsibilty important? Historically/Now? Should we teach social responsibilty in school? Why/Why not
