22 Chilean Miners Reach Surface

After being trapped since August 5th and spending a total of 69 days underground, the first Chilean miner was freed at 12:11am today. Florencio Avalos was the first out, followed by a yelling and cheering Mario Sepulveda, who could be heard even before he reached the surface. He even handed out souvenir rocks from the mine. Every 40 to 60 minutes, another man was pulled up in the 13 foot capsule. Nobody has ever survived this long trapped underground, and for the first 17 days, they didn't even know if they were alive. All 33 are expected to be out by tonight.
